Could a daily glass of kefir during pregnancy ward off gestational diabetes?
NCT ID NCT07682077
First seen Jul 02, 2026 · Last updated Jul 02, 2026
Summary
This study investigates whether drinking kefir, a fermented dairy drink rich in live bacteria and yeasts, from around 14 weeks of pregnancy until routine diabetes screening can improve blood sugar control and reduce the risk of gestational diabetes. Pregnant individuals are randomly assigned to consume 250 mL of kefir daily or continue their usual prenatal care. Researchers measure blood glucose, insulin, gut microbiome changes, and other metabolic markers to see if this simple dietary addition makes a difference.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Kefir (fermented dairy beverage)
What this could lead to
If effective, drinking kefir during pregnancy could become a simple, food-based way to help prevent gestational diabetes and improve metabolic health for mothers and babies.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with 60 participants, so results may not apply to all pregnant people. Kefir may cause digestive discomfort, and its benefits are not yet proven.
