Could a gut hormone boost islet transplants and free type 1 diabetes patients from insulin shots?

NCT ID NCT03746769

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether adding a natural gut hormone called gastrin to islet cell transplants can help people with hard-to-control type 1 diabetes produce their own insulin and stabilize blood sugar. About 20 adults aged 18-68 with unstable type 1 diabetes will receive donor islet cells plus gastrin. The goal is to see if they can stop insulin injections and avoid dangerous low blood sugar episodes.
