Iron boost after hip break: could it speed up recovery?
NCT ID NCT07659184
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether giving iron supplements to older adults (75+) after hip fracture surgery can reduce fatigue and improve recovery. 528 participants will receive either intravenous iron, oral iron pills, or a placebo. The goal is to see if iron helps with energy, mobility, and quality of life during rehabilitation.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Iron (ferric derisomaltose and ferrous sulphate)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could lead to a simple, low-cost way to help older people recover better after a hip fracture, with less fatigue and better quality of life.
- What could go wrong
- This is a Phase 4 trial, so the drugs are already approved, but it's still possible that iron supplements won't significantly improve recovery or could cause side effects like stomach upset.
