Iron infusion trial aims to boost exercise in lung disease patients

NCT ID NCT07359599

First seen Jan 23, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 17 times

Summary

This study tests whether giving iron through a vein can help people with pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs) who also have low iron levels. Many patients with this condition have trouble absorbing iron from pills. The trial will compare intravenous iron to a placebo in 306 participants, measuring how far they can walk in six minutes and their quality of life after 24 weeks.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

ferric carboxymaltose (intravenous iron)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a new way to improve exercise capacity and quality of life for many pulmonary hypertension patients who also have iron deficiency.

What could go wrong

This is a phase 4 trial, but it's still uncertain whether correcting iron deficiency will actually improve symptoms. The study is relatively small and the effect may be modest or absent.
