New monitor may keep seniors safer during routine colonoscopy

NCT ID NCT06987630

First seen Dec 16, 2025 · Last updated May 13, 2026 · Updated 23 times

Summary

This study tested whether using a special monitor called the Integrated Pulmonary Index (IPI) can reduce the risk of low oxygen levels in older adults during painless colonoscopy. The IPI combines breathing rate, heart rate, oxygen level, and carbon dioxide to give a single score. Doctors used this score to guide care, like lifting the patient's jaw or increasing oxygen flow. The study involved 153 people aged 65 and older and compared those monitored with IPI to those without.
