Could a One-Time spinal shot ease pain after lung surgery?

NCT ID NCT05351229

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a single injection of morphine into the spinal fluid can reduce pain and the need for other painkillers after video-assisted or robotic lung surgery. About 90 adults undergoing elective lung surgery will be randomly assigned to receive either the morphine injection or a placebo (salt water). Neither the patient nor the doctor will know which they received. The goal is to find a better way to manage post-surgery pain.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

morphine sulfate

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, single-dose method to better control pain after lung surgery and reduce the need for other painkillers.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial (90 people) testing a well-known drug for a new use. The effect may be small or not better than placebo, and morphine carries risks like nausea, itching, or breathing problems.
