Cash and cameras: a new way to beat latent TB?
NCT ID NCT05022862
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether offering small financial rewards and using video calls to watch people take their medicine can help more people complete treatment for latent tuberculosis. About 399 adults in Baltimore will be randomly assigned to usual care, video check-ins alone, or video check-ins plus incentives. The goal is to see if these strategies boost treatment completion rates and prevent active TB.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
financial incentives and video directly observed therapy (vDOT)
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could significantly increase the number of people who finish latent TB treatment, reducing the risk of developing active TB and spreading it to others.
What could go wrong
This is a behavioral intervention study, not a drug trial. Results depend on participant motivation and may not apply to other settings. The study is still recruiting, so outcomes are not yet known.
