Dental implant depth showdown: 4mm vs 6mm – which saves more bone?
NCT ID NCT07574710
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looked at whether placing a dental implant 4 millimeters or 6 millimeters below the gum line after a tooth extraction leads to better bone stability around the implant. Thirty-five healthy adults received one implant each, and researchers measured bone loss and implant stability over one year. The goal is to find the best depth to keep the bone healthy and the implant secure.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
dental implant placed at different depths (4 mm or 6 mm below the gum line)
What this could lead to
If one depth clearly preserves more bone, dentists may adopt that approach to improve long-term implant success and reduce bone loss.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-center study with only 35 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The one-year follow-up is too short to know long-term effects.
