Could early ibrutinib stop CLL before it starts?
NCT ID NCT03207555
First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether giving the drug ibrutinib early to people with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) who have no symptoms but are at high risk for progression could be more effective than waiting. Twenty-three participants took ibrutinib daily for up to 24 months. The goal was to see how many achieved complete or partial remission, and how long they lived without the disease getting worse.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Ibrutinib (Imbruvica)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that starting ibrutinib early in high-risk CLL patients without symptoms delays disease progression and improves outcomes.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small Phase 2 trial with only 23 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. Ibrutinib has side effects like bleeding, infection, and heart issues.
