Can CO2 calm POTS? small study investigates

NCT ID NCT04271878

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether raising carbon dioxide levels in the blood can lower heart rate and reduce symptoms in people with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) when they stand up. Researchers will test different CO2 levels in 26 adults with POTS during a tilt-table test. The goal is to find the best CO2 concentration for symptom relief.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Carbon dioxide (CO2) via RespirAct™ system

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple breathing-based strategy to help manage POTS symptoms.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early study (26 people) testing a temporary effect, not a treatment. It may not translate into real-world benefit or work for everyone.
