Smartphone app aims to keep colorectal surgery patients out of the hospital
NCT ID NCT04236128
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a mobile app that sends daily health check-ins can reduce unplanned hospital visits after colorectal surgery. About 670 adults from three Canadian hospitals will either receive standard follow-up care or use the app for 30 days after discharge. The app asks about symptoms and recovery, then gives personalized advice. Researchers will compare how many people in each group end up back in the hospital or emergency room, and whether the app improves recovery quality and self-confidence.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Mobile app for post-discharge monitoring
What this could lead to
If effective, this app-based monitoring system could reduce hospital readmissions and emergency visits after colorectal surgery, improving recovery and patient confidence.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively early-stage study with 670 participants, and the app's impact may be limited by patient engagement or technical issues. Results may not apply to all hospitals or patient groups.
