Ancient herb takes on PCOS: new hope for millions?
NCT ID NCT07603505
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested a herbal extract from a Himalayan plant (Nepeta adenophyta) in 116 women with PCOS. Participants took either the herb, the standard drug metformin, or both for 4 months. The goal was to see if the herb could help restore regular menstrual cycles and improve metabolic health. This is an early-stage trial, so results are preliminary but could point to a new treatment option.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Nepeta adenophyta hedge extract (NAE)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new, natural option for managing PCOS symptoms like irregular periods and insulin resistance, possibly with fewer side effects than current drugs.
What could go wrong
This is an early Phase 1 trial, so results are preliminary. The herb may not work better than existing treatments, and its long-term safety is unknown. Side effects are possible.
