Could skipping routine heparin be safer for heart patients?

NCT ID NCT06981624

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether giving the blood thinner heparin only when needed, instead of routinely, can prevent radial artery occlusion after a heart catheterization procedure. Researchers will enroll 500 patients and compare rates of artery patency, bleeding, and nursing time. The goal is to see if a selective approach works just as well with fewer side effects.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

heparin

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that giving heparin only when needed is just as effective as routine use, potentially reducing unnecessary medication and nursing workload.

What could go wrong

This is a moderate-sized trial (500 participants) comparing two strategies, not a new drug. The results may not change standard practice if selective heparin leads to more occlusions or complications.
