Timing of blood thinner injection could prevent artery blockage after heart procedure
NCT ID NCT06890312
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether giving the blood thinner heparin before inserting a tube into the wrist artery can prevent a common complication: blockage of that artery. About 550 people undergoing a heart procedure through the wrist will be randomly assigned to receive heparin either before or after the tube is placed. The main goal is to see which timing reduces the risk of artery blockage the next day.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
heparin
What this could lead to
If it works, this could lead to a simple change in practice that lowers the risk of radial artery blockage after heart procedures.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage study. The timing change may not reduce blockage rates, and there is always a risk of bleeding with heparin.
