Can a dialysis-like treatment save kids with lung failure after transplant?
NCT ID NCT00120575
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether early hemofiltration, a continuous dialysis procedure, could improve survival in children who develop respiratory failure after a bone marrow transplant. Only 6 children took part. The idea was to filter out inflammatory molecules that drive lung damage. The trial is complete, but results are limited due to the very small number of participants.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
hemofiltration (a continuous form of dialysis)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a way to reduce deadly inflammation and improve survival in children with respiratory failure after bone marrow transplant.
What could go wrong
This was a very small, early-phase trial with only 6 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Hemofiltration carries risks like infection or bleeding, and the treatment may not change outcomes.
