New combo therapy could boost fluid removal in heart failure
NCT ID NCT07372040
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests three different drugs—empagliflozin, acetazolamide, and metolazone—added to standard water pills (loop diuretics) in 66 adults hospitalized for acute decompensated heart failure. The goal is to see which drug works best at increasing urine output over three days. Researchers will also measure changes in heart stress markers. The trial is currently recruiting.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
empagliflozin, acetazolamide, and metolazone
What this could lead to
If successful, this could identify a better add-on therapy to help heart failure patients get rid of excess fluid more effectively during hospitalization.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 66 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The drugs also carry risks like electrolyte imbalances or kidney issues.
