Potassium binder may help heart failure patients stay on lifesaving drugs

NCT ID NCT07576257

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a potassium binder called Sodium Zirconium Cyclosilicate can help heart failure patients take higher, more effective doses of a standard medication (aldosterone receptor antagonist) without dangerous potassium spikes. About 110 adults over 70 with heart failure and reduced kidney function will participate. The trial has two phases: an initial open-label period to adjust doses, followed by a 6-month blinded comparison against placebo.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Sodium Zirconium Cyclosilicate (a potassium binder)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help more heart failure patients tolerate higher doses of aldosterone receptor antagonists, potentially improving heart function and reducing hospitalizations.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial (Phase 2) with only 110 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The potassium binder itself can cause side effects like stomach upset or electrolyte imbalances.
