Doctors as tax helpers: a new way to boost family health?
NCT ID NCT05612685
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether healthcare providers can help low-income families file taxes and receive tax credits by referring them to a tax filing app. Twenty-one parents with young children took part, and researchers checked if they filed taxes and how their health changed over time. The goal was to see if this simple referral could reduce stress, depression, and improve child development.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Healthcare provider referral to a tax filing app
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that a simple referral from a doctor can help low-income families get money they are owed, which may improve their health and well-being.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study with only 21 participants and no comparison group, so results may not apply to others. It only tests feasibility, not whether tax credits actually improve health.
