Boosting radiation for prostate cancer: a safer cure?

NCT ID NCT03424850

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether giving a higher dose of radiation directly to the prostate (via HDR brachytherapy) can better control early-stage prostate cancer without causing too many side effects. About 36 men with low- or favorable intermediate-risk prostate cancer will receive one of three radiation doses (21, 23, or 25 Gy). Researchers will track PSA levels to measure cancer control and monitor any short- or long-term side effects.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

High dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy (radiation implant)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could establish a more effective radiation dose for early-stage prostate cancer with manageable side effects.

What could go wrong

This is an early-phase trial with only 36 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Higher radiation doses could increase the risk of urinary or rectal side effects.
