Doctor's digital nudge: could a computer prompt boost liver cancer detection?
NCT ID NCT06624189
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether an automatic reminder in the electronic health record can increase the number of cirrhosis patients who get screened for liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma). The reminder prompts doctors to order a liver ultrasound when they see a patient with cirrhosis. The trial will enroll 1,300 participants and measure how often the ultrasound is ordered and completed, and how many cancers are found.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
automated reminder system for doctors
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a simple way to increase liver cancer screening rates in people with cirrhosis, potentially catching cancers earlier.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study focused on process, not a direct treatment. The reminder may not change doctor behavior or improve health outcomes.
