Gum treatment may ease heart failure burden

NCT ID NCT07036289

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether deep cleaning for gum disease can lower a key heart failure marker in the blood. About 80 adults with or without heart failure will receive dental scaling and root planing. Researchers will track changes in NT-proBNP levels and gum health over 6 months to see if treating periodontitis helps manage heart failure.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

mechanical dental treatment (scaling and root planing)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show that treating gum disease helps control heart failure, offering a simple add-on to standard care.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 80 participants. It may not prove a clear benefit, and results might not apply to all heart failure patients.
