Animal membranes battle to save molars: which works best?
NCT ID NCT06681532
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two different membranes (one from cow pericardium, one from cow collagen) used with a bone graft to treat a specific type of bone loss between the roots of lower molars. Twenty patients with class II furcation defects will receive one of the two treatments, and their gum health and bone levels will be measured at 3 and 6 months. The goal is to see which membrane leads to better bone and gum attachment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- bovine bone graft mixed with concentrated growth factor, covered with either native collagen membrane or bovine pericardium membrane
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could point toward a better way to repair bone loss around the roots of lower molars, potentially saving teeth that might otherwise be lost.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small, early-stage trial with only 20 patients, so results may not apply to everyone. The membranes are from animal tissue, which could cause allergic reactions or rejection in some people.
