Simple handgrip exercise may cut clot risk for PICC patients
NCT ID NCT06370702
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a simple handgrip exercise can lower the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in adult hospital patients with a PICC line. Participants squeeze a soft ball for 10 seconds, rest, and repeat for 10 minutes, three times a day. The trial will track 2,500 patients to see if this easy activity reduces clot rates.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- handgrip exercises
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this simple exercise could become a low-cost way to prevent dangerous blood clots in patients with PICC lines.
- What could go wrong
- This is the first study of its kind in the US, so there is no prior evidence yet. The exercises may not reduce clot risk, and results may not apply to all patients.
