Eye test could reveal hidden brain changes years before Alzheimer's symptoms

NCT ID NCT06023446

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study uses a safe, painless eye scan called OCT to look at support cells (glia) in the retina, which is part of the brain. Researchers want to see if these cells work differently in people with early signs of Alzheimer's compared to those without. If they find a difference, it could lead to a new early screening test and help develop treatments that target glial health. About 100 participants with mild cognitive impairment or normal thinking will be scanned in light and darkness.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a new way to detect Alzheimer's early and suggest that targeting glial cells might lead to future treatments.

What could go wrong

This is an early observational study with only 100 participants. It does not test a treatment, so it may not lead to any direct benefit. Results may not apply to all people with Alzheimer's.
