Poop pills may stop deadly infections in pancreatitis patients
NCT ID NCT07464392
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) — transferring gut bacteria from healthy donors — can prevent infections in people with moderately severe or severe acute pancreatitis. About 150 adults will receive either FMT liquid or a placebo through a feeding tube. The goal is to see if FMT reduces serious infections like infected pancreatic necrosis or pneumonia.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) liquid from healthy donors
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a new way to prevent life-threatening infections in people with severe pancreatitis.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage trial with only 150 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. FMT carries a small risk of transmitting infections or causing digestive discomfort.
