Could a simple liver scan replace risky heart catheters?

NCT ID NCT07222813

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether a quick, painless liver scan (FibroScan) can accurately detect high central venous pressure in people with heart failure. Currently, doctors use a catheter inserted into the heart to measure this pressure, which carries risks. The study will enroll 149 adults with suspected or diagnosed heart failure who are already scheduled for catheterization. Researchers will compare the liver scan results to the catheter measurements to see if the scan can reliably identify elevated pressure.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

FibroScan (non-invasive liver stiffness measurement device)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a safe, quick, and needle-free way to check for fluid buildup in heart failure patients, avoiding the risks of invasive catheterization.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage diagnostic study, not a treatment trial. The liver stiffness cutoff may not be accurate enough in all patients, and results may not apply to those with liver disease.
