ER study tests which stomach pain remedy works fastest

NCT ID NCT06241183

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares intravenous famotidine (a stomach acid reducer) and oral antacids (like Maalox) for treating dyspepsia (stomach pain) in the emergency department. About 80 adults with upper abdominal pain will rate their pain every 15 minutes for an hour. The goal is to see which treatment provides faster and better pain relief.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Famotidine (IV) and Maalox/Mylanta (oral antacid)

What this could lead to

If this trial succeeds, it could show which treatment works faster and better for stomach pain in the emergency room, helping doctors choose the best option.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase study with only 80 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Both treatments are already approved, so no major breakthrough is expected.
