Robot suit could help MS patients walk again – small trial underway
NCT ID NCT04786821
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study explores whether a powered exoskeleton—a wearable robot—can help people with moderate to severe walking problems due to multiple sclerosis (MS) exercise and walk better. Twenty-four participants will either use the exoskeleton or do standard exercises with a fitness instructor twice a week for 8 weeks. The goal is to see if the exoskeleton is acceptable, safe, and can provide moderate-intensity exercise, with the hope of improving fitness and walking ability.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Phoenix Exoskeleton suit (a wearable robot) and standard exercise training
- What this could lead to
- If this works, it could offer a new way for people with MS to exercise and improve walking, potentially boosting fitness and quality of life.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small feasibility study with only 24 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It's not designed to prove effectiveness, and using the exoskeleton may be uncomfortable or not intense enough for some.
