Exoskeleton and spinal zaps help paralyzed patients walk again?

NCT ID NCT03096197

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study is testing whether adding a mild electrical stimulation to the lower back can boost the benefits of a robotic exoskeleton for people with chronic spinal cord injury. Twenty-four participants who cannot walk will receive either exoskeleton training alone or combined with stimulation. The goal is to see if the combination helps them walk farther, faster, and with better balance.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Exoskeleton-assisted walking and transcutaneous lumbosacral stimulation

What this could lead to

If successful, this combination therapy could help people with chronic spinal cord injury walk farther and faster, and improve their balance.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage study with only 24 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The improvements may be modest and not lead to independent walking.
