Dialysis patients try exercise to fight muscle weakness
NCT ID NCT07303179
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether adding a structured exercise program during dialysis sessions can improve strength, walking ability, and quality of life for people with end-stage kidney disease. About 800 patients will be randomly assigned to either dialysis plus exercise or dialysis alone. The exercise includes warm-up, resistance training, and cycling, done three times a week for two years. Researchers will track changes in walking distance, muscle strength, hospitalizations, and overall well-being.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- structured exercise rehabilitation therapy (ERT)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could lead to a standard exercise program that helps dialysis patients feel stronger, walk farther, and have a better quality of life.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively small, early-stage study. Exercise may be hard for some patients to stick with, and benefits might not be large or apply to everyone.
