New nerve block may help you breathe easier after gallbladder surgery

NCT ID NCT07478601

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a nerve block called the erector spinae plane (ESP) block can reduce pain and help patients breathe better after laparoscopic gallbladder removal. 70 adults having elective surgery will be randomly assigned to receive either the ESP block plus standard pain care or standard care alone. Researchers will measure lung function and pain scores to see if the block makes a difference.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
erector spinae plane block (a nerve block using local anesthetic)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a better way to manage pain and protect lung function after gallbladder surgery, reducing the need for strong painkillers.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study (70 people) that hasn't started yet. The nerve block may not improve breathing or pain significantly, and there are rare risks like infection or allergic reaction.
