New nerve block aims to cut opioid use after gallbladder surgery
NCT ID NCT07676552
First seen Jun 30, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a specific nerve block, called the rectointercostal plane block (RICPB), can reduce pain and the need for strong painkillers after gallbladder removal surgery. Sixty adults scheduled for laparoscopic cholecystectomy will receive either the RICPB or standard local anesthetic at the surgical sites. Researchers will measure pain scores and total morphine use over the first 24 hours after surgery to see which approach works better.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
bupivacaine
What this could lead to
If effective, this nerve block could become a standard way to manage pain after gallbladder surgery, reducing the need for strong painkillers.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with 60 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The block may not provide better pain relief than current methods.
