One injection vs. two: a new approach to shoulder surgery pain?
NCT ID NCT07762417
First seen Aug 13, 2026 · Last updated Aug 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether a single nerve block (SPENG) can match the pain relief of a combined two-nerve block approach after shoulder arthroscopy. Adults aged 18-70 undergoing elective shoulder surgery will be randomly assigned to receive either the SPENG block or the combined suprascapular and axillary nerve blocks. The main goal is to compare the highest pain scores in the first 24 hours after surgery, while also looking at factors like how long the block takes, opioid use, and recovery quality.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Shoulder Posterior Pericapsular Nerve Group (SPENG) block, a single-injection ultrasound-guided nerve block procedure
- What this could lead to
- If the SPENG block works as well as the combined nerve blocks, it could offer a simpler, faster, and potentially safer way to manage pain after shoulder surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, single-center trial, and the SPENG block may not provide adequate pain relief compared to the established technique. There are also risks of nerve block complications, though rare.
