New injection could offer quick relief for acute back pain
NCT ID NCT07434024
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether an ultrasound-guided nerve block injection can quickly reduce pain and improve movement in people with sudden, non-specific low back pain. 300 adults with severe pain and trouble walking will receive either a local anesthetic or a saline placebo injection. The goal is to see if the block helps them get out of bed and move more easily before leaving the hospital.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
local anesthetic (or isotonic saline as placebo)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new, non-opioid option for quickly easing severe low back pain in the emergency room.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial with no phase assigned, and the placebo group also receives an injection, so the true benefit of the anesthetic may be small. Results may not apply to all types of back pain.
