DNA clue may predict stroke risk during common heart procedure in seniors

NCT ID NCT02972008

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is looking at whether a blood test measuring DNA methylation can predict the risk of silent brain injury in elderly patients undergoing TAVR, a minimally invasive heart valve replacement. About 542 people over age 70 with severe aortic stenosis will have their DNA tested before and after the procedure, and brain MRIs will check for new lesions. The goal is to find a biomarker that identifies high-risk patients, not to test a new treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a simple blood test that identifies which elderly patients are at higher risk of brain damage during TAVR valve replacement.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It only measures risk factors and does not test any intervention to prevent complications.
