Time-Restricted eating may slow aging in overweight adults

NCT ID NCT05880095

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This completed study looked at whether eating only during a specific daily window (time-restricted eating) can slow the aging process in 176 adults who are overweight or have early fatty liver disease. Participants followed a Mediterranean diet with or without calorie restriction or time restriction for six months. Researchers measured changes in metabolism, body composition, sleep, mood, and molecular markers of aging to see if time-restricted eating offers unique benefits.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

time-restricted eating (TRE) combined with a Mediterranean diet

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a simple dietary pattern that promotes healthier aging without requiring calorie counting.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study with no phase designation, so results are preliminary. The effects may not apply to people without overweight or liver issues, and long-term benefits remain unproven.
