Could donor stem cells ease knee pain? new trial aims to find out
NCT ID NCT05526001
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This Phase 3 trial tests whether a single injection of ELIXCYTE, made from donor stem cells, can reduce knee pain better than a placebo (saline). About 165 adults aged 40-80 with moderate knee osteoarthritis who haven't gotten relief from standard treatments are participating. The study is double-blind, meaning neither patients nor doctors know who gets the real treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ELIXCYTE (adipose-derived stem cells from donors)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a new, non-surgical option to reduce knee pain and improve function in people with osteoarthritis.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 3 trial, but it's still experimental. The stem cells may not work better than a placebo, and there could be side effects like joint pain or infection.
