Can a light therapy clean cancer cells from blood? new trial aims to find out

NCT ID NCT05157581

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This phase 2 trial is testing whether a procedure called extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) can reduce tumor cells in people with Sezary syndrome, a rare blood cancer that affects the skin. Twenty participants will receive ECP weekly for a month, then every two weeks for five months. Researchers will analyze blood samples to see how the immune system responds and whether cancer cells decrease.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) with methoxsalen
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that ECP effectively reduces cancer cells in the blood and skin for people with Sezary syndrome, offering a treatment option.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 20 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. ECP is a complex procedure and may not work for all patients.
