Can a meal during dialysis boost energy without hurting treatment?
NCT ID NCT07687498
First seen Jul 07, 2026 · Last updated Jul 08, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether eating a special kidney-friendly meal during hemodialysis affects how well the treatment works and how tired patients feel. Adults on maintenance dialysis will receive the meal during one period and no food during another, acting as their own control. Researchers will measure dialysis adequacy and fatigue levels to see if intradialytic nutrition is safe and beneficial.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- standardized renal meal (450 kcal, 20 g protein, low potassium and phosphorus)
- What this could lead to
- If eating during dialysis is safe and does not reduce treatment effectiveness, it could improve patients' nutrition and energy levels.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage crossover study with only 36 participants. Eating during dialysis might lower treatment adequacy or cause blood pressure changes.
