Could earlier testing for pregnancy diabetes prevent complications?

NCT ID NCT03523143

First seen Jul 02, 2026 · Last updated Jul 02, 2026

Summary

This trial investigates whether screening for gestational diabetes earlier in pregnancy (at 18-20 weeks instead of the usual 24-28 weeks) and providing prompt lifestyle advice and medication if needed can reduce complications such as large babies, C-sections, and high blood pressure. About 2,000 pregnant women in Taiwan are taking part, with half receiving early screening and half receiving standard care. The study compares outcomes for both mothers and babies.

Active substance

early screening and lifestyle intervention

What this could lead to

If early screening proves better, it could reduce complications like large babies, C-sections, and high blood pressure in pregnancy.

What could go wrong

This is a single-country trial, and early screening may not improve outcomes enough to change practice. Some women may receive unnecessary treatment.
