Balloon treatment could stop hidden heart plaques from causing attacks
NCT ID NCT06416813
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether using a drug-coated balloon (DCB) on vulnerable plaques in heart arteries can prevent future heart problems. 140 people with acute coronary syndrome and non-threatening plaques were randomly assigned to get either standard medication alone or medication plus the balloon treatment. The main goal is to see if the balloon helps keep the artery open after one year.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- drug-coated balloon
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a new way to prevent future heart attacks by treating dangerous plaques before they cause trouble.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study with only 140 people. The balloons may not work better than standard medication, and there are risks like vessel injury or blood clots.
