Blood filter shows promise for liver failure patients
NCT ID NCT05030571
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a blood-filtering device called DPMAS can help people with acute-on-chronic liver failure, a life-threatening condition. The device removes toxins and inflammatory substances from the blood, which may improve immune function and survival. Forty intensive care patients will be randomly assigned to receive either standard care alone or standard care plus DPMAS.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Double plasma molecular adsorption system (DPMAS) – a blood-filtering device that removes toxins and inflammatory substances from the blood
What this could lead to
If it works, DPMAS could become a standard add-on treatment to improve immune function and survival in acute-on-chronic liver failure.
What could go wrong
This is a small early-stage trial with only 40 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The device is not a cure and is used alongside standard care; benefits are uncertain.
