Magic mushroom study: can depression be treated without the trip?
NCT ID NCT05710237
First seen May 13, 2026 ยท Last updated May 13, 2026
Summary
This study looked at whether psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) needs to cause psychedelic effects to help with depression. 41 adults with treatment-resistant depression were given either psilocybin alone, psilocybin plus risperidone (a drug that blocks the psychedelic effects), or risperidone alone. The goal was to see if blocking the trip still allowed for antidepressant benefits.
