DMT for depression: scientists test if the trip matters

NCT ID NCT06927076

First seen Apr 04, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 11 times

Summary

This study tests whether DMT, a psychedelic drug, can reduce depression symptoms through its biological effects alone, or if the psychedelic experience is necessary. 112 adults with major depression will receive DMT or a placebo, some while sedated with propofol to block the psychedelic experience. Researchers will track mood changes over time to understand how DMT works.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a treatment for depression that separates the psychedelic experience from the drug's biological effects.

What could go wrong

This is an early-phase study with only 112 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The use of propofol sedation adds complexity and risk.
