ICU ultrasound trial aims to catch silent blood clots before they kill
NCT ID NCT05112705
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether doing ultrasound scans twice a week on critically ill patients can catch deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) early. The goal is to prevent pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lung) and reduce deaths within 90 days. The study will enroll 1,800 adults in the ICU who are expected to stay at least 2 days.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Proximal lower limb ultrasound (diagnostic test)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that routine ultrasound screening in ICU patients helps prevent deadly blood clots and saves lives.
What could go wrong
This is a large but early-stage trial; the benefit of surveillance ultrasound is unproven, and it may not reduce mortality or could lead to unnecessary treatments.
