Could an allergy pill tame gut inflammation?

NCT ID NCT07333716

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing whether adding the allergy medicine desloratadine to standard ulcerative colitis treatment can better control inflammation and symptoms. About 44 adults with mild to moderate ulcerative colitis will take either desloratadine plus mesalamine or mesalamine alone for three months. Researchers will measure changes in disease activity and blood markers of inflammation.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
desloratadine
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple, low-cost add-on treatment to better control ulcerative colitis symptoms and inflammation.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 44 participants, so results may not apply widely. The benefit over standard therapy alone is uncertain, and desloratadine may cause side effects like drowsiness or dry mouth.
