A simple hospital checklist could flag hidden malnutrition in kids with IBD
NCT ID NCT06723418
First seen Aug 11, 2026 · Last updated Aug 12, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a standard nutrition screening tool, called PYMS, can accurately identify children with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis who are at risk of malnutrition. Researchers will use the tool on 2,000 children aged 4–18 with IBD in outpatient and inpatient clinics across different countries. If the tool doesn't work well, the team will develop a new, IBD-specific nutrition risk score called PIBD-NUTS. The goal is to help healthcare professionals spot nutritional needs earlier and improve care.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Paediatric Yorkhill Malnutrition Score (PYMS) – a nutritional screening tool
- What this could lead to
- If the existing tool works well, it could be adopted widely to quickly identify children with IBD who need nutritional support. If not, it may lead to a new, IBD-specific nutrition risk score.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational validation study, not a treatment trial, so it won't directly change outcomes. The existing tool may not be accurate enough in this population, and results may vary across different settings.
