New 'Chemical Sniffer' could help surgeons find brain tumors Mid-Operation

NCT ID NCT06387979

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests a device called DESI-MS that analyzes tissue during brain tumor surgery to tell cancerous from healthy tissue. Researchers will check tissue samples from 285 adults undergoing glioma surgery. The goal is to see if this tool can give surgeons faster, more accurate information to guide tumor removal.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could give surgeons real-time information about brain tumor tissue during surgery, potentially improving how completely tumors are removed.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage, non-interventional study that is currently suspended. The technology may not prove accurate enough in practice, and results may not apply to all types of brain tumors.
