Can money plus talk therapy beat depression in poor rural women?
NCT ID NCT06295250
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether adding poverty alleviation (like financial support) to group talk therapy helps low-income rural women in Bangladesh with depression more than therapy alone. Six hundred women aged 18-45 with depression and economic hardship will be randomly assigned to either therapy only or therapy plus poverty help. Researchers will track depression symptoms, relapse, and how well the program is adopted over 18 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
manualized group based psychotherapy (Problem Management Plus) and poverty alleviation
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that addressing both poverty and mental health together is more effective for treating depression in low-income rural women than therapy alone.
What could go wrong
This is a single study in a specific population, so results may not apply elsewhere. The intervention is complex and relies on non-professional peers, which may affect consistency.
