Could a pen replace the needle? new study tests painless dental injections for kids
NCT ID NCT07656194
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a new dental anesthesia pen causes less pain and anxiety than a traditional syringe in children aged 6 to 12 who need a filling. Each child will try both methods (with a two-week break in between) so they can compare the experience directly. The goal is to see if the pen makes dental visits more comfortable for kids.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Dental anesthesia injector (painless pen)
What this could lead to
If the pen works better, it could make dental visits less scary and painful for children, improving their experience and cooperation.
What could go wrong
This is a small early study with only 22 children, so results may not apply to everyone. The pen might not be significantly better than the standard syringe.
